This rifle remains true to the limited information known about First Sergeant Ryan’s privately purchased heavy barrel and scoped Sharps rifle, as depicted in Ralph Heinz’s painting from the Battle of the Little Big Horn. The rifle is a C. Sharps Arms Co., New Model 1874 Hartford Sporting Rifle, chambered in 45-70 and weighing approximately 15 pounds. The rifle is equipped with a full-length traditional style scope, following the designs available in 1876. This limited-edition Sharps rifle can further be identified by its unique 1SGT-1 through 50 serial number and period First Sergeant bars engraved on the right flat. These limited-edition Sharps rifles are all optioned with American walnut stocks, traditional pack hardened receivers, flame blued screws, #1 ½ 30” barrel with rust blue finish, Hartford barrel collar, and Hartford silver forend cap.
